Open Letter to Tamarack Camps Community for 2012-2013 Board of Directors Referrals

2012-2013 Board of Directors Referral Form

I have had the opportunity to serve on several nonprofit boards. My best experience has been with the Fresh Air Society/Tamarack Camps. The quality and dedication of the volunteers and professionals, as well as our mission of helping the next generation of Jews grow, has made this a rewarding and fulfilling task. I would highly recommend involvement in this agency to anyone.  Your work will be appreciated and you will be making a worthwhile contribution of your time.

- Board Member

Since I was 8 years old, Tamarack Camps has been an integral part of my life. Growing up, it provided my strongest influences to shape my Jewish Identity.  My years at Tamarack have also shaped who I am personally and professionally. I hope that through my giving, of time, of past experiences and financial support, I will help children who attend Tamarack Camps today and in the future, experience a program that will have as great an impact on them as it did on me.

- Board Member

How do I join the Board?

Attend our family camps and weekend programs, get to know the programs and philosophy, volunteer for a sub-committee of the Tamarack Board of Directors, meet some of the Board members or staff and let them know you would be interested in serving on the Board. Names for potential Board members are submitted for nomination in the spring of each year. The number of vacant spots to fill on our board varies from year to year.

Do I need any prior experience to join the Board?

No! Mostly you need a passion for children, Jewish communal life, the outdoors and a sense of fun.

Current Board members generally have experience in one or more of the following areas: Jewish volunteer work, are parents of past, current and future campers, have attended one (or more) of our programs, are former campers themselves.

Helpful skills and talents include fundraising, childhood education, psychology, Jewish education, marketing, accounting, human resources, and nonprofit management.

What a Board member does:

Help ensure that campers of all ages and backgrounds are given a positive, safe, fun, and Jewish experience in a spectacularly beautiful environment.

Lend life experiences as a parent, former camper, businessperson or artist to help advise the staff when needed.

Each Board member joins or chairs at least one sub committee. These committees will help plan for the summer and year round programs. Committees cover a variety of areas such as Property, Marketing, Programming and Medical to name a few.

Attend Board meetings - We have approximately eight Board meetings a year. One is at Camp Maas and the rest are all held locally.

Board terms are for three years in length and a Board member can serve two consecutive terms.

Other opportunity for involvement:

Volunteer opportunities on the committee level are open to interested parties that may wish to become a Board member in the future. These committees meet throughout the year to discuss, brainstorm and develop goals and ideas for various areas relating to Tamarack Camps. Contact our Executive Director, Steve Engel, if you are interested in finding out more about volunteering for a sub committee, or if you are interested in joining the board of directors.
